I just learn( just this week) that I am a type 2 diabetic and taking meds. I would like to know if there is any store to fine foods for Diabetic's. like cereal, breads etc., etc! .My 2st Question is ... I was low all my life how bam I am high and have to take meds for it. My husband is a type 2 diabetic and he always tested me ..my readings were 128, 130. now 211, 175, 158, (168 todays) I have had two surgerys( the last one Monday Feb. 18th the 1st one in Oct. 07) on my shoulder. And I have been under alot of stress over my injuries that happen from a fall in Aug. 07 could this caused me to be Diabetic?? My Brother is one and my Grandfather was one as well. I am 59 years old and wight is 203 lbs. Just seems out of the blue I have become a Diabetic . I have been the same wight for years , and years.Hope someone can help me with my Questions.

You'll pay through the nose for anything that is packaged for just diabetics if you find it. Just get the information you need on good nutrition and make a shopping list from that. Learn about good carbs and bad carbs. Use sugar substitutes, no white bread, white potatoes. Some cereal may say low sugar, but have lots of carbs. Stress can cause your blood readings to be on the high side, so can being sick. It didn't cause you to be diabetic. You didn't become diabetic out of the blue. Get a nutritionist or dietitian. They are as important as your doctor. Get education !!!! Take your meds as directed and test your blood often. Start to walk every day or do some kind of exercise regularly.

Every store has acceptable products for diabetics. I don't trust most of the items that say "sugar free" or "diabetic friendly", you really have to look at labels. Some choices for cereal would be those with high fiber contents which are subtracted from the carbs per serving because the fiber doesn't increase blood sugar. You may want to look at a lot of bread because it is extremely variable - even if you just stick to whole wheat (which you have to). There are some breads that are 22 carbs a slice and some that are 10.

Your other option is to change your breakfast habits and have eggs or egg white omlettes, eat more salad (with chicken breast) instead of a sandwich, etc. It may take more time initially, but your more healthful alternatives are tasty and quick.

I would say that no, your stress and injury probably didn't make you diabetic. Obviously it runs in your family, but type 2 diabetes happens over a long amount of time. Your weight doesn't have to change dramatically to kick start it, it has been a lifetime of bad choices, bad genetics, and bad luck.

My father was always dealing with his low blood sugars when I was young. He believes it shows a problem with insulin levels regardless if they were low instead of high. He has just recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes without any weight changes (in fact over the past year he had begun making better choices regarding food and exercise). He was certainly surprised, but then thought about his hypoglycemia issues and feels like that was a contributing factor.

Good luck to you. It isn't the end of the world, or even your lifestyle. Just take it day to day and make sure you deal with the stress that you are feeling, as it can mess your numbers up quite a bit in itself. It can't cause diabetes, but once you have diabetes, it can cause those numbers to go higher.

Greetings!
