Friends and Family - What YOU Should Know about Diabetes
If Your Relative Has Diabetes, YOU Could Be at Risk, Too!

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, people who have close relatives with diabetes are more likely to develop the disease themselves. Many diabetes symptoms seem harmless, but early detection and treatment of diabetes can improve your chances of living long and well.

Early detection means better health and longer life.

not all diabetics are skinny =some are fat==if you don't want to get diabetes ,then make sure you follow a proper diet and don't eat a lot of junk food =also have a yearly check-up for it=good luck

eating less sugar. Your body can't make useless ugly fat without excess carbs. Yes grease can be digested into sugar and be stored as fat if you eat more than your body needs.

Diabetic people gets thinner because they have very low sugar intake. Sugar produces fats. There is one way to check if you have diabetes or not. On the inner part of your ankle, the part between the ankle and the leg, press it with your finger. If the flesh remains sunk after you press it, then it might be an early indication of diabetes. If the flesh goes back right away, then you're ok. One way to avoid diabetes is to eat less sweets.

to avoid diabetes...eat low fat low sugar...south beach low carb type diet.... exercise 4 to 5 times a week or more....dont get fat.....it does run in family's...I have it, my grandma my mom my aunt my grandfather all had it.get a sugar test every 6 mo or every yr...ask at drugstores..usually free or low cost or try DR

Your dad may have purposely lost weight to control his diabetes better. Also, there is a metabolic reason: Diabetes prevents glucose from being transported to the cells for energy. Therefore, ironically, although the blood glucose may be high and the person may eat plenty, the cells are actually starving to death!

If you eat healthy and you are active, then you are much less likely to get diabetes. Genetics is only 1 piece of the puzzle, it is not a death sentence. Diabetes is caused by obesity and inactivity.

An annual fasting blood glucose level should be drawn to test for insulin resistance, a sign that diabetes mellitus is imminent. Even if you have insulin resistance, it is not too late to change your lifestyle and stave off complications.

There are also classic symptoms of diabetes.

When you have too much glucose in the blood, your kidneys will try to pass it through the urine, which may make the urine smell slightly sweet. Normally, urine should have no glucose in it. Sugar is much like salt; water follows it. So if you're passing glucose, it will take a lot of water with it and you'll pee. A LOT. Because you're passing so much water, you will also be incredibly thirsty.

Remember at the top of this post, what I wrote about cells starving to death? Since the glucose is stuck in the blood, and insulin can't get it where it belongs, you will have no energy. On top of wanting to sleep all the time, you may feel very hungry.

Again, heredity is only a small factor. You still have control of this terrible disease. Eat a balanced diet, get some exercise every day (at least 30 minutes of aerobics or some other physical work), and keep your weight at a healthy level. And see your doctor if you have fatigue, increased appetite and/or unintended weight loss, and you're peeing and drinking a lot more than usual. When you have your annual physical (you do get one, right?), make sure you get a fasting blood glucose or a Hemoglobin A1C, which can indicate your glucose levels over a period of three months.
