Diabetic Diet plans?

My boyfriend (as of the past 8 months) is diabetic and has been for the past 20 years. I now cook for the 2 of us and while I try to cook as healthy as possible ... foods low in fat and oil and basically no fried foods .... I need to know what kinds of foods I can and should make to help with his condition.

He doesnt take as good of care of himself as he should I need to know what things to look out for to help him be as healthy as possible.

Any help or answers are greatly appreciated.

So if you are diabetic and have been for a long period ... how healthy are you and what is your diet plan ?

A Diabetic diet plan....there are two diffrent types of plans you can follow. One is a calorie intake and the other is a carbohydrate intake. A good calorie diet is typically tried first and if this doesn't accomplish things then they usually try the carb one but I will give you an example Calorie diet for the typical male below...1800 calories but this would depend on his exercize and activity levels too....
Breakfast:
2 starches....one slice of bread is one starch(example)
1 friut....apple,unpeeled,small (4 oz)
1 milk/dairy....2 percent is 1 cup only
1 meat....1 is typically 1 oz. or 1 slice of regular bacon.
2 fat...1 would be 1 tsp of butter
Snack
1 Starch....5 Saltine crackers
2 meats....2 slices on low fat lunchmeat or 1 slice meat
1slice Cheese.
2 fat.......1 tblesp of mayo, miracle whip
Dinner
4 starch......1 c.Corn, rolls, bread (if u use garlic bread
include 1fat)
1 fruit......makes for a better dessert.
3 meat.....1 = 1 oz
2 fat.......butter for rolls breads
Snack
1/2 cup milk
2 starch...a little cereal, crackers
1 fruit
Some people dont like the snack before bed so its ok to move between lunch and dinner but you'll have to adjust his insulin for the extra meal during the daylight hours. Typically, I like to use the snack before bedtime because it stablizes the sugar levels through the night (so you wont drop to low) One thing is though...this is for a diabetic that is typically on insulin injections, you should talk to your local diatician at your local hospital. let her know that you are cooking for him and you need to know hat an how....Youll be able to explain his situation better so she can help with the perfect diet for him. Good luck

is he type 1 or 2? either way, focus on carb balance through out the day to help maintain healthy blood sugars. use whole grains, instead of using sugars, fats, salts and other flavorings like that, use fresh peppers, onions, herbs and spices to give flavor to food. these foods offer health benefits and a more stable/even blood sugar while adding good flavor to food. having smaller balanced meals with a snack between each is also very good.

I've been diabetic for 2 years but i know allot if he does not keep healthy he can die so he needs to watch. It is common for people that do not keep healthy, high bloodsuger can acquirer some symptoms are:constant urination, extreme thirst or take care of him ok :)
