Diabetic check up with nurse (uk)?

hi i was just wondering, my partner was recently diagnosed as being diabetic and is due for a diabetic check with the nurse tomorrow. what does the check up include? what should he expect? thanks x

aslo its medication controlled not diet controlled (pills not insulin)
thanks for your answers so far

Height, weight, blood sugar, urine test for keytones, usually feet and a consultation on how uv been feeling and sugar levels.

I should imagine a bit of blood for sugar level & check his weight.Good Luck

hi they will test eye sight ,weight, height,

and make sure you are ok and happy with things

Eye test, weight, height, blood pressure test and he should take a wee sample from first thing in the morning. He should also have done a blood sample a couple of weeks ago so they've got the blood-sugar results for the appointment too.

They will chat for a long time about diet really, and make sure he's eating the right things.

What is done varies from practice to practice and from appointment to appointment. My guess is that, as he has recently been diagnosed, this will probably be the first of the checks that he should have annually.

He should have a check on his feet by a chiropodist, looking for cuts, blisters dry skin etc. A doppler device (? I think its called) is used to check circulation in his feet, legs.

Sometimes a dietician will be available if he wants to discuss his diet, otherwise the nurse can help.

His weight, height, urine and blood pressure will be checked too. He will probably have had blood tests taken just before. These will be checked & discussed. If he hasn't had blood tests he will probably be asked to get some done before the next review.

He should take his blood testing record as the nurse will want to discuss his blood sugars/medication. Lastly, he will have an opportunity to discuss problems/concerns or ask questions.

Depending on the size of your practice some or all of these elements would be included. He should use these checks as a 'chat' with a knowledgeable/specialist friend. The diabetes nurses in the UK are generally very well trained and approachable. And they handle management of conditions like diabetes more and more these days.
