Who is a diabetic?

im a diabetic and i want to get to know a little more about it.since i just got it.Best person to anwser gets best anwser if it helps me out

Are you looking to know more about the disease or are you looking to connect with people on here who can best help you out. You ask "who is diabetic" so I'm thinking the latter.

I'm the mom of Gina, age 5 and fairly seasoned in type 1 diabetes. My email address is attached to my profile. My recommended favorites on here for answers are Starr, Sue, Em_nz, and... well... me. I'll give you no-nonsense advice when you need it. Be warned, I'm also an Italian Sagittarius, so dont ask me what I think unless you really want to know! Good luck, and sorry to see you join the ranks.

this is a very vag question....diabetes will kill you slow if you don't take it seriously.. sugar for a diabetic is like acid..ours body's can't use it like normal ppl.... so when the acid is introduced in mass quantities it find all the little blood vessels and nerve endings and burns them out
like say fingers and toes going numb.causing blindness over years and years.. shouting down your kidneys...and this isn't over night..it takes years. some faster then others......so a good life style and eating plan and exercise will save your life
i have been diabetic for 13 years now.they have cut off my left leg starting 6 inches blow the knee and in 4 surgeries i am now above the knee amputee.... i take 3 different pills and 2 different insulin's for diabetes

It is such a many-faceted disease. It's a progressive disease. You begin with diabetes but this disease itself can lead to other diseases, i.e. heart diseaase, hypertension, neurapathy, glaucoma, etc. You need to do more than go on a site like this - read up on the disease, go to a diabetes education class and join a support group. The support groups are the most helpful, since you get the benefit of many years of other's experience with the disease.

Cut down on your bread consumption, don't over do it on the fruit, limit all sweets i.e. candy, cookies, cake, pie and fruit drinks and eat more high quality protein and salads.. See your eye doctor regularly. Try to exercise at least 3 x per week. I know this can be overwhelming, but try to make small changes one at a time. Hope this helps.

Use the google or any other search engine and look for websites on diabetes. There are only about a couple hundred thousand to go through. Yes, there are repeats in the listings, but you can skip the repeats.

http://www.diabetes.about.com is a good place to start. Deb, the guide, has a lot of very good articles for the interested person to read.

Be sure to take time to digest all the info available. The learning curve on this disease is sharp. You don't have to learn it all in a couple of days. But you do have to learn your own body, how exercise affects you, how food affects you, and how your meds affect you.

This all takes time!!

Start a journal. Note testing times, meds, foods, exercise, how you feel!

Keep a 3-ring notebook. Make copies of any article you want to refer back to. Get copies of all blood work results. http://www.healthatoz.com has some good tracker programs you can use online. They also have good info on meds!!!

to test a food, choose one of your snack hours: test glucose, eat the food, test again 90 minutes to 2 hours after the first test. If the glucose spike is more than 50, decide if you will delete this food or eat it in small amounts or infrequently.

Never cause your body to crave anything!!! Have a small bit of whatever, like half or quarter serving of birthday cake and ice cream!

Never neglect to take your meds on the proper schedule!! If you are to take something twice a day, pick an hour, take the med at that hour and 12 hours later! It works much better that way.

Good luck!

You are asking two questions. If your pancreas does not provide insulin to metabolize glucose you are most likely a Type 1 diabetic. If your pancreas provides insulin to metabolize glucose, but your red blood cells resist insulin then you are most likely a Type II diabetic.

Which are you? Any response will have to be base on type of diabetes. But, generally reduce carbohydrate intake to reduce to conversion of carbs to glucose. On package food the loser the carb number measured in grams the better. Once you see a dietitian you will learn you carb limit per meal that will best for you balance against your calorie count to stay slim or loose weight.

Generally you will eat a little less at major meals and snack healthy snacks to maintain a certain level of glucose. You want to avoid peaks and valleys.

The life style of a diabetic is life on healthy eating moderately, exercise and a good mental outlook. Actually you will find that if you can control your condition that life is wonderful, long and healthy.

Best Wishes.

I am. Fortunately I found out early. It's a great motvator to do some things you know you should anyway In paricular look at it as an opportunity to improve your diet, and start getting some exercise. Those will do more than anything to help your sugar level. I also take glimeperide which hel;ps the sugar without (for me anyway) any side effects.
