My diabetic dad thinks I am overreating. Please give me your opinion on this.?

My dad is a diabetic. He broke his leg at the knee 9 days ago at work. He just came home from the hospital today. He didn't bump his foot when he broke his leg, but ever since his accident his foot has been really bruised and he has a tingling, numb feeling in it. He can't wiggle his toes either. Its been 9 days and its still bruised and he can't feel your hand if you touch his foot.

His doctor said "Everything is okay and not to worry cause its just poor circulation". He is not supposed to see his doctor again for another 2 weeks. The doctor told him they would deal with the numbness in his foot when he sees him in two weeks.

None of this seems right to me and I think he should get a second opinion, but he thinks I am overreacting. I am very worried about him since he is a diabetic. I would hate to see him have to have his foot taken off.

Can I please get some advice or your opinions on this? Thanks.

Opps! Yes, I meant he thinks I am overreacting, NOT overreating. Geez, can ya tell I haven't had much sleep today :)!

What a good daughter you are. Taking care of dad.
I don't think you are really overreacting, you just want to make sure your dad is fine. You can not force him to get a second opinion, but you can explain to him why you are concerned.
You could call the doctor he saw and ask him by phone if there is anything you should be looking for, any symptoms which would prompt a sooner visit. Just call him and reiterate the fact that Dad's is still bruised and numb and that you just need reassurance that it is fine. I do this for my mom ALL the time. You deserve a little peace of mind! Best wishes to you and dad.

You mean overreacting? It says overreating on your question, any concern is a good concern, I would keep an eye on the situation..

Diabetes causes severe problems with circulation and the areas which can suffer and do suffer the most is the feet and hands due to poor circulation, diabetes has always had tis high risk with the extremities of the hands and feet.

i would suggest if your dad is worried maybe he goooes to his dr and sees the nurse or if the pain becomes worse and his foot becomes white with no pulse and cold in a different way (I would imagine it would feelwarm if it is injured at present) so above applies if the swelling is the same but the colour change occurs or he has any other pain that is different to what he is getting in the calf as he will be at risk of DVT but your dad does not want to worrry you with all this he wants you to stopfussing and making him feel useless, beleive me he would have been warned by drs and nurses on discharge for any problems that may/may not occur. he doesn't want his little girl to be worrying around him i would imagine he is juust soooo glad to be back at home with you that initself will make him happier the last thing he needs is you telling him that things are wrong.

i can understand you are worried and want the best for your dad but give him a break(excuse the pun-non intended) just pamper him with out all the questios and telling him that the drs are wrong he just wants his daughter to be herself-not a nurse. but between you and me and anyone else reading you can be both just do one silently and only become vocal if you REALLY feel something is wrong. in the meantime enjoy having dad back home and relax love, you've probably been through it too worrying about him give yourself a break and enjoy having him back just give him the usuall grief that you would he may feel inadequate and vulnerable and you won't help if you go on. believe me take a back seat and keep aneye if anything changes iam sure your dad will let you know but if you keep nagging him he will shut down

you are a good person he is lucky to have you and he knows it-he is trying to tell you to please stop faffing about i'm fine

love and good luck

terrie

Diabetes is a sneaky disease, you have every right to be worried since it's your dad. The doctor's right, diabetics have really poor circulation specially on the distal portions of their extremities. I bet your dad has had problems with feeling his foot for some time now but he just didn't ell you about it. As long as there's no open wound (a source for bacteria to enter) 2 weeks 'til the doctor's appointment's just fine. ALWAYS remind him though to wear socks and not to go barefoot even if he's in your house for he might step on a tack and not know it. This could lead to infection. God bless your dad.
