I am thinking about Dentures?

Has anyone had success with dentures. I am on the fence about them and was looking for some feedback?

Why? It is in your best interest to preserve as many of your natural teeth as is practical. If you have severe periodontal disease, you may have some teeth that can't be saved without extreme measures, but try to keep some.

Upper dentures stay in by means of suction to the roof of your mouth. The suction is good at first because you have a large bony ridge where the teeth were, but as the years go by, the bone is resorbed by the body and the ridge flattens out. Then the suction is not strong enough to hold the denture in and you end up with loose dentures that you can't do much about. Retaining even a few teeth gives you the advantage of 1) teeth to clasp a partial plate to and 2) they help to maintain the bony ridge.

Lower dentures just don't stay in place well, period. And as the bony ridge disappears with age, things get very bad. You should retain some lower teeth AT ANY COST!

Some of your decision should be based on your age. If you are elderly, you will probably keep enough bone to hold the dentures in relatively well for the rest of your life, but if you are young or middle aged, full dentures are a bad choice.

I agree with Amante - great answer. Dentures are better than nothing - they are NOT better than teeth.

Over the years as your redundant jaw bone (alveolus) resorbs, the denture will become more and more difficult to tolerate.

If dentures can't be avoided, consider implants if you're medically suitable and can afford them.

try to save as many teeth as you can and get partials to fill in the rest..even if it is 2 teeth of top and 2 on bottom, that way you will retain your bone. If you can swing it and can't save teeth get implant supported dentures.
