Dentistry vs optometry?

Dentistry vs optometry?

I will be a freshman in college in the fall, and I have decided to go into the health care field after that. I have narrowed my choices to optometry and dentistry. I like both of them in a different way.

Dentistry: I admit, I am not crazy about teeth; however, I enjoy working with my hands. From what I hear, dentists are left to work/charge as they please. So in short, the biggest reason that I think I would like dentistry is that there is almost no BS associated with it.

Optometry: I am probably more interested in the eyes than in the mouth, so I would probably like the central idea of the career itself; however, from what I have heard on other sites, the profession of optometry is a mess: Too many optometrists, commercialization, difficulty of getting on insurance plans, etc... So I would probably like the field itself better, its just all the extra BS that scares me away.

Is there anything I have left out/mistaken about either profession that might affect my decision later on?

Personally, and this is from a non-medical perspective, I feel MUCH happier going to the optometrist than I do to the dentist. Optometrists just tend to be more likeable people! :) Going to an optometrist is also a less intrusive and less painful appointment.

I'd suggest visiting a few offices and asking if you could watch the doctor's/nurses/assistants work to see if it's something you could see yourself doing in 6-8 years!
