Has private dentistry been set up to extract money ?

And what did B_lair have against NHS dentistry?

Hi paulpoulboy , the prices show it is a racket on the same level as cosmetic surgery. You put it nicely but I resent being told to go to Eastern Europe for dental treatment. Enjoy while you can because I predict a flood of dentists in the UK and Ireland, this is the way competitive business works you know and dentistry is a business as you say

YES
My dentist has just told me that one crown I have is weeping.
He has got to replace it.
Thats going to cost me 450 pounds stirling plus VAT for ONE tooth.
I told him I could get a new lap top for that.
I have no choice there are no NHS dentists here that are still taking on customers.

Unfortunately we all tend to think every body is ripping us off.
I bet you dentists complain about the cost of a plumber.
Perhaps we will be OK when all the Eastern European dentists come over here.

Greed is all they care about.

YES!!! insurance it why this its possible. They can charge what ever they want if they know someone will pay it. They don't care who that person is.

Hi Mike, ok I take onboard you question.
But the private sector in medicine is like any other private sector its a business.
Therefore charges will apply.Dentistry is a skilled profession and accordingly prices reflect this.
I dont know about the health service in the UK or the government there, but the health service here in Ireland is a total joke. Our government, led by Bertie Ahearn has mis-spent and squandered money on the most ridiculous of things and left the health service in bits, meaning elderly people are sleeping on trolleys in hospital corridors etc.
Our public dental service barely exists ,for kids only, and covers only basic procedures like extractions and fillings.
Adults with a medical card can only avail of the same basic procedures, and many dentists hate to see public patients coming in though they wouldnt admit it.
Personally I do my utmost and give my full attention to public patients as I feel everyone has a right to quality health care.
Successive blundering governments in the UK and Ireland re to blame for poor national health.

Private dentistry is dear but its also dear to run.
In Ireland there is an agreement on standard prices between us dentists and, maybe accurately,we've been accused of running a cartel!
Health care is much cheaper in eastern europe and unlike many dentists I recommend patients who need extensive work done to travel to a reputable surgery there to save money

dentistry is possibly the most skilled profession that you come into contact regularly in your life. think about. how many other people do you see that graduated at the top of their class throughout their schooling? now only select from that small group the people who have a hand steady enough to work in tenths of millimeters. so you are dealing with the most dexterous, intelligent person you've ever come into contact with. now, try to find one that has enough personality to care about your ungrateful self.

now you also have to keep in mind that it costs well over $1 million to become a dentist and setup an office. you dont' jsut go down to the end of the block and hang a dentist sign.

i'm sure you never really thought of it this way and you thought that the guy who changes your oil could pop a couple teeth out at the same time.

trust me, dentists are grossly underpaid.
