Medicine in dentistry?

In general dentistry, you take the same basic science classes as physicians. After school you can opt in dentistry to do a general practice residency. In this 1-2 year program, you go through medical grand rounds, work in a hospital as a dentist, and complete rotations in internal medicine, emergency medicine, anethesiology, endoscopy and head and neck trauma. How much to you think a program like this would help with understanding overall traditional systemic medicine? Would that be beneficial in dentistry?

I heard about this program. NYS for one requires this if you aren't specializing now. It is designed to increase knowledge of systemic medicine so that you are able to treat patients in compromised, unstable medical states in an intense setting. You are even on call for part of the time. It is definitely worth doing I feel if you want to be the best at your profession. I am considering this program myself because when I get out, I don't want to limit myself to just root canals or straightening teeth. I need diversity. I think the GPR programs are good for that.
