Dentistry Question...?

PLEASE ONLY ANSWER IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THIS FIELD

I am a high school senior and am above average in academics... I want to pursue a career as a dentist in my future. First I am going to get a bachelors degree (not sure in what yet... any suggestions?). Second I want to go to dental school to become a dentist.
I am currently at a dilemma. I REALLY want to make sure that dentistry is right for me before I go and spend loads of money on dental school.
Basically I was thinking of doing a 10 or 20 week Saturday only vocational school to become a dental assistant. That way I will be able to work in the environment of a dental office and get a feel if that is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
If I was to become the assistant and worked while getting my bachelors, do you think it would be hard to keep up with my school and work at a University? Or should I become an assistant, work while getting an associates at a community college and then transfer for my bachelors?

I think that you would be able to work as an assistant part-time and take classes. You want to get great grades so full-time is probably not a good idea. You may even be able to start in a dental office as a sterilization assistant while you are taking the certified assistant courses. I went to one that was available at night. I think that you are VERY smart to make sure dentistry is the right field for you. However, if you are working for a dentist that you don't get along with... move on to another dentist before making a decision about dentistry all together. As with any field, there are some rotten apples in the barrel.

I would ask your dentist if you could shadow him/her. Explain what your concerns are and most docs would love to have you in their office to help you decide if this is the vocation for you. I'd advise against spending the time needed to become a dental assistant and concentrate on your college education. Most offices aren't going to want to hire you as a temporary employee as it takes time to learn the office. Good luck!
