Dental experts- what's your opinion on sealants for adults?

I am 25 years old, just went to the dentist and he told me I should get sealants in 7 of my teeth. He says those 7 teeth have deep grooves and I'm at high risk for cavities if I don't get them. My insurance doesn't cover sealants though. Are they really worth it? Should I get ALL 7 of them done? $$

Sealants are supposed to help get you through the "cavity prone years" of the teens. By the time I think adn adult might benefit from sealants, I do what is called a "preventive resin restoration." You drill into the groove, minimally at first, and see if there is decay there. If there is NOT, you just go ahead and place a bonded resin filling. If there IS decay, you drill and fill as usual. It would be a fairly small filling most of the time.

Since I started using a laser device called the Diagnodent a few years ago, I must say that I have found MANY cavities that I would have ignored or "watched" on adult patients. This supported my own observation that at least 9 times out of ten when I thought I was going to do a "fancy sealant" (preventive resin restoration), the tooth turned out to be decayed under the surface anyhow.

I've only heard of dentists using sealants on childrens teeth.
Have never heard of it being used on an adult.

Hard to give you an accurate answer without seeing your mouth. What is the rest of your mouth like? How many fillings do you have? Have you had any recent cavities?

I'm a big advocate for sealants for both adults and children. I've found many times that when we go to clean out the grooves of the teeth, a cavity was started just below the surface. Your dentist might discover that on you and then your insurance would help out. Go ahead and invest the $$ in your teeth; it's worth it.

Sealants are great. i personally have very deep groves in my teeth and im sure if i didnt have the teeth that arnt "rotten" sealed then every tooth in my mouth would have cavities. I really would consider getting a second opinion. 7 is alot, maybe he is right and all 7 badly need sealants..or just a couple and he is more interested in you money than teeth.. hmmmmmm

you don't have to get all 7 done, just the ones you want to keep. you ought to seal the deep grooves on your teeth so they don't decay, it's worth it. a small investment compared to how much they'll cost to fix after they do decay!

Semen is a fairly good one, i will send you some in a condom if you want.

i say you should since you have a high risk of getting cavities the only thing is that sealants do don't last for ever you have to not eat hard sticky foods because after time they wear out

  • Do dental sealants stain?

They shouldn't. You may get some stain around the margin of where the sealant fills in the biting surface of the tooth, but that would probably mean that the margin is leaking slightly.
