Do toothpicks affect your dental health?

My mom won't let me go the dentist because she believes that the utensils that they use are dangerous for my dental hygene. Now she thinks that toothpicks will do the same. Can you guys help me talk my mom into saying that going to the dentist is not bad?

I have been a dental assistant for the past 4 years. Every instrument used, including all surfaces are sterile. All instruments are placed in a sterilizer for approx 30 minutes at high pressure and temperatures to get rid of any and all bacteria and viruses on them. All surfaces, including counters and chairs are sanitized with either or both Hospital Grade wipes or sprays. There is definitely no need to worry about the sanitation of the utensils if that is a factor.
I agree with your mother that toothpicks can be bad for your dental hygiene, especially the wooden type, as they can splinter off into your gum tissue and cause infection. Also, you may accidentally push it too far down into you gingival line (were your gums and teeth meet) which will open an area up and make it prone to infection. However, as for the instruments themselves, they are safe. In the manner and types of instruments used, they get out the plaque and tartar which normal toothbrushes can no do, nor can listerine. Also, it helps to increase bloodflow to the area to promote the growth of healthy tissue. Hope this helps, Heather

Not going to the dentist is bad for your dental hygiene. Hygienists are licensed in what they do, so they know how to used their intruments. There are some things that you can't clean with self-care so you have to see your hygienist for a proper cleaning.

Going to the dentist is the best thing you can do as they have the tools to help keep your teeth and gums healthy. They are the only ones that have the tools that will remove plaque - no tooth brush can do that. Good luck and show her as much info on the internet as possible!

Just go anyway, your mom is wrong. Dental utensils are not dangerous.

My dad never had dental insurance so I never went to the dentist until I was an adult. I had cavities festring for years and never knew it, now I have had 3 root canals and several fillings and I am only 26 years old. Go to the dentist now before it is too late. :)
