Why do dentists recommend toothpastes that prevent caries, that can actually lower their profits?

It is a mistery for me why toothpastes that have the aim of eliminating cavities are recommended by dentist associations such as ADA. I mean, if one day one of this toothpastes will 100% guarantee 0 cavities, won't this put almost everyone in the dentist association that recommended it out of business?

It looks more like they say "you can use this, cos' anyway we know you will still have cavities and need us" doesn't it?

Wouldn't it be more logical to have a toothpaste recommended by an Anti-dentist association? Whose aim is to really prevent all dental problems and put dentists out of business? Would this sound more trustworthy to you?

(PS I hope I'll never go to a dentist who reads this message of mine) :))))

Well dentists are used for more than just filling cavities. Part of their job is educating their patients about proper oral care, not giving them bad information to cause them to have to come back. If you were a dentist and you told your patients things that would cause decay or other problems, just so you get more money from their visits, is not just personally wrong, but in turn can turn into lawsuits. Dentists get plenty of patients for various reasons besides cavity problems, most people even come in every 6 months for cleaning and yearly checkups, they make their money so there would be no reason for them to lie to you in order to gain profits.

The toothpaste can't really be 100% guaranteed no cavities, because the toothpaste's effectiveness all depends on the person using it. Not all people brush their teeth correctly or as often as they should, same with flossing. If you brush your teeth 3 times a day everyday for a year with no flossing, you'll probably have cavities between your teeth where the brush couldn't reach, so there is no way that this could be enforced.

Well the dentist probably knows that we most likely don't brush our teeth for 2 minutes. 2 minutes everytime u brush is the reccomended time to REALLY prevent cavities. Most people only brush for 1 minute but that's not enough.

I don't think dentists make the big money filling cavities. I don't know the costs involved on their end, but my cavities cost $80-$160 to fix, but everything else costs thousands. I think the major stuff and cosmetic stuff is where the money is at.

This is like how specialists make lots more than general practitioners. Doctors would prefer no one ever got sick. Then, they can all go into surgery and giving botox injections and make twice as much.

Well, dentist has to follow his code of ethics and just like this website., dentist like other human beings , they like to help people and give sound adivse. You know , money isn't everything.

If you don't want a Dentist to read a post under Dental your kinda taking a chance arn't you???
Most Dentists don't have time to come on these boards to answer questions that are from people that either don't have a regular Dentist or that don't trust what their Dentist says.

Of course they are going to recommend them. That doesn't mean they will work for every patient. Toothpastes are and always will be a problem. There are way to many choices. The ones that say tarter control or whitening toothpastes are just more abrasive. The ones with mouthwash--just a gimmick- they have a small enough dose that they have to say it's in there but don't rely on it like really using mouthwash. These are all to get the public to buy them. AND IT WORKS They really do not have a high enough concentrate of material in them to do any help. In other words they do more harm. Most people brush to hard and think the longer I brush and the harder I brush the better I'm doing. WRONG!!!when they add abrassive they hurt the enamal faster.

The last answer that the person said it isn't always about money. SORRY! it IS BECOMING ABOUT MONEY-- EVEN THE American Dental Association. They've figured out how to get the gullable public that believes everything it hears how to fall for gimmicks. Why on Earth do you think there are over 25 different toothpastes out there??????

Why do doctors prescribe medicines that actually cure infections, when they could just let people suffer?
