Do Dementia Care Homes Practise "true" Person Centred Care ?

Are our "gray" elders benefiting from our scientific findings in socialPatient care or Only from the Science of Drugs and their effects on their physical health alone. Medical advances in theraputic treatments of diseases is unchallenged and draws every person to a debate . we all love to attach bodies that refuses to legitimise a certain drug that would have found to be beneficial to the patients . We are even prepared to get court mandates against the prescribers or anyone that prevents us access to it . The Media is quick to form clips and documentary films to a-mass public support .Now what of Social Science findings and their relationship to health why are they not a point to rally behind change ? Why do we agree to visible social and mental neglect patients with dementia are subjected to ?
Can we agree to a day of -Wake up,get dressed, lay tables, eat, sit and play puzzle , eat and sleep.Staff are task orientated and inspectors measure tasks outcomes only no Social interaction

The jargon of Care standards measurements of minimum expected care in dementia care is absolute and not in relation to advances in scientific findings .What are they measuring in relationship to dementia care ? Is it appropriate ? Are there Tools to measure social care outcomes in relationship to dementia care ? I put it across to you that a lot of time is spent trying to establish meaningful communication with people with dementia and certain skills are needed . Is time spent with them to achieve this need . What do staff value most changing or empting of commodes or sitting and talking to the clients .Is there a tool that measures Social interactions and if yes is it in use ?

=yes there are boards of competency that oversee hospitals, nursing homes etc. unfortunately they are all "papered up" and put on a show for best behavior. I know this from experience. If you can possible keep a loved one at home, that is the safest and most loving environmentt they can be in..

Not sure what you are saying.
(I think) You seem to be saying that all we are doing is drugging people so they just comply so they will make the job of staff easier and you want to see homes where people are given a "normal daily life routine". Is this correct?

If so, then my reply is: That may be the case you see in the country you live in. And even if it is, I still think that sounds like a gross generalisation. Certainly, I can say that there are lots of good dementia care facilities in Australia. There is NOT enough of them, true. But the ones we have, lots of them are very good and under strict guideline as to what the residents should expect.
People with dementia certainly do need care and the staff do run programmes and activities which will give dignity and some "normality" to the person's day.

Some residents NEEDS to be drugged. I have worked with people with various level of dementia and can say that for some people, their dementia is so severe and they may display agressive behaviour, or so confused they are a danger to themselves and others. Physically restraint them is not an option so there are times when drugs may need to be used.

"day of -Wake up,get dressed, lay tables, eat, sit and play puzzle , eat and sleep." might be ok for those who are placid and /or can still do those tasks. For some, even swallowing is near impossible. For those, staff can only be task oriented because it simply takes a long time to care for these ones.

(ok I will get off my soap box now)

That is my opinion and I am more than happy to hear any opposing argument.

Gray elders are like gray imports.
Best left in Spain.

Go and take a look at your local Care homes. Get a few Ofstead reports but either keep a sane mind or be nice to your Children!
