Can anyone tell me how beneficial oxygen is for vascular dementia? and how can one get hold of it? |
having heard from a friend whose parent had dementia and when admitted to hospital for something else was put on oxygen and became very lucid and their memory was restored to a great degree after 7 years in a home for people with dementia. unfortunately she died of a different problem so we have no idea if oxygen therapy could have helped long term. Any ideas ? i was a nurse for a number of years, benefits sound great people with dementia has irreversible brain damage that is due to a number of factors. there isn't a way yet to reverse the effects dementia has on a person, but you are young enough to help prevent some of the factors that cause it. A low fat diet, stopping smoking, no excess alcohol intake, and keeping the brain active are all ways in which you could help prevent dementia. People who have dementia do have episodes of lucidity, and it seems like your Friends mum was having one of those in the hospital. Low oxygen levels can definitely affect one's mental status. It may be that your friend's mother had another problem causing low oxygen levels, and that made her appear demented, and when she was finally put on oxygen, her mental status cleared up. I don't know if the oxygen would benefit someone with normal oxygen levels in the blood, but maybe it would. It is an interesting question. It has no real long term effect on the prognosis and is also impractical as an ongoing therapy. |
