Dehydration and water weight gain.?

I have been slimming down successfully lately and I have steadily went down to 171 lbs this week. Anyway this weekend I got very wasted and was very hung over on Sunday. Needless to say I was dehydrated and weighted 166lb. I'm knowledable enough to know that this weigh means nothing, and I'd gain it right back (and get rid of my headache) later in the day after some rehydration.

My question. Its been about 2 days now and I'm at 176. Again, I have been fairly steady at 171 and I clearly didn't gan 5 lbs on actual fat weight over one night of drinking.

Does your body overcompensate (store up) extra water after a period of substantial dehydration. Just curious. Thanks.

Disclaimer: I know getting *that* wasted isn't particularly healthy - but please no asides on that, its not part of the question.

Yes. When you are dehydrated, your body releases a hormone called vasopressin which causes your kidneys to remove some of the water from your urine (hence the brighter yellow color) and put the water into your intracellular fluid. This increases your predisposition to retain water.

However, with that being said, alcohol is one of the most fattening substances that you can consume. It has 7 calories per gram (almost double the caloric density of carbohydrates), and it slows your metabolism.

Here is some info about the fattening effects of alcohol.

Haha, sounds like a fun night. I do believe that your body will store up water when you're dehydrated and when you have a higher salt content in your body until you regain proper hydration and the salt/water balance gets back to normal. Just like when some are too skinny, fat stores up to keep them going. It happens with females too, they bloat up with water weight around their period which is about a gain of 5 lbs. to make up for loss of hydration and then they go back down to normal weight once PMS is over, sorry if that was TMI, just health.

I had the stomache flu yesterday, and i weigh 98 pounds i went to weigh myself while i was sick cus i felt really weak and i weighed 91 pounds then this morning i was feeling a lot better and i weighed myself and i was back to 98 i guess i was just dehitrated so if u asked if u loose weight when u get dehidrated the answer is yes.

No, water weight is when you have to high of sodium in your body not water, if you have to much water in your body you'll bloat, and go to washroom a lot, water really just passes through the body

Yes, your body holds onto the extra water as a defense mechanism. This way, your not going to cause the damage to your internal organs. We hold on to water to prevent damage, the same way when too many calories are cut from your diet and you quit losing weight.

Drink up, and the next time, drink some water before bed.
