Dehydration...When should we go to hospital?

Howdy there. My mom is currently having a bout of dehydration. We're trying to talk her into going to the hospital. She is in tears at the thought and will not go unless she HAS too. She is not sweating at all, she does not feel hot. And, she is in a warm room. She seems to be producing less tears then she was before. And the skin on the back of her hand sticks a little when you pull it up. Not a LOT, but some. These are the symptoms I know of for now, would you suggest hospitilization? Thank you.

Oh, just found out, she's been throwing up. I assume this is how she got dehydrated to begin with.

Let her stomach rest. Nothing to eat or drink for a couple of hours. In a healthy adult there is usually no reason to go to the ER to get IV fluids. After the rest period start out with plain water, tempature doesn't matter and take small sips at a time. Keep trying to get fluids in. You should be able to rehydrate her by oral fluids alone. If the throwing up contines or gets worse then you might need to see a Dr. for medicine to stop it.

If she can't hold anything down then she needs to go in & they will rehydrate her w/ iv. I used to have to do that back when I was pregnant cuz i had constant morning sickness.

If she is not able to keep any liquid down, is feeling faint, looking pale, or continuously throwing up, I would go to the hospital.

ASAP--call the emergency room tonight. People can die from being dehydrated.

Get your mom Pedialite to replace nutrients she is lacking
Give her plenty of water (or ice chips)
Gingerale and crackers may help the nausea--also weak, sugary tea

Get her to the hospital immediately!!! She is already showing dangerous signs of dehydration (skin, tears). Once a person gets to the point that the skin is "tenting," it is downhill QUICKLY from there!!! Please tell her to go NOW. I am an emergency medical technician, and she is in danger!

NO Pedialyte and DEFINITELY NO GATORADE!!!!!! Gatorade is full of sugars and junk that will NOT rehydrate her in the state she is in. Please, I am begging you, get her to the hospital~!!!!

If she vomits everything going in. She needs to be evaluated. If she is elderly confusion is a sign of low serum sodium levels which can be dehydrated.

Let your mom know that getting treated for dehydration is nothing to worry about, but letting it go and get worse can be life threatening.Untreated severe dehydration may result in seizures, permanent brain damage,and/or death.Reversing dehydration is simple, and almost painless, just some IV fluids,is usually sufficient enough.Take a look at the website I posted, maybe it'll help her decide what to do.Hope she feels better very soon.
