I think I have deep vein thrombosis...How worried should I be?

I was recently in a car accident and have been resting alot for the last 3 weeks. I have noticed tenderness in my right thigh and a redness going up the vein. I had been to the doctor and he looked quickly and said it was just a bruise healing but I did not have a bruise there. It is firm to the touch and reddish and seems to be going up the leg through the vein. Now it's starting on the other leg. I have no health insurance and my doctor is not in until Sunday. It has been 2 weeks. Should I be very worried and possibly go to the hospital? Is it possible he made a mistake? Thanks for any help!

If you do not have a violent pain in your legs it's likely that you have a DVT. From what you have said it appears to me that you have Phlebitis which is inflammation of the veins and not something to worry too much about. Your legs are likely to be warm to the touch and maybe you are at the onset of Varicose veins. The best way to proceed is to maintain your overall fitness, elevate the legs whenever possible and wait for the inflammation to go away. Go back and see the Doctor for confirmation.

I would go to the ER if I were you. You need an ultrasound to rule out dvt. Your doctor probably shrugged you off because 3 weeks of resting isn't really all that much time off your feet, but it still is possible to develop a clot. Did you have any cuts in this car accident? You could have an infection. I would go to the ER just to be safe than sorry. I am sure you would probably be fine waiting until your doctor was in on Sunday, but I don't like to take risks with my health, so I would go. Good luck to you.

It's very possible, he made a mistake and yes, you should go to the hospital. This is nothing to mess around with.

It's always good to have a second opinion if you can afford it.

with your history of immobilization & trauma , i think you should see a doctor , Venous Duplex Imaging is an easy common test to confirm whether you have have DVT or not ..

I think you ought to see a different Doctor! Go the E.R. and Good Luck. I know it's a hard decision to go to hosp. without insurance but there are times when you don't have a choice.

I would go to emergency room now. I was working with a patient once and I noticed a similar kind of thing. We took her to emergency and it turned out to be an embolism which was could have caused a stroke or more serious problems had it not been treated. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

Hi there , sorry too hear about your car accident. I think theres a change that you may have a clot. I have an excessive clotting disorder and a big risk factor is being of your feet , for whatever reason for prolonged periods of time. Id recomend yoou go too the emergency department too get it checked out again. A clot in the thigh is a bit more serious than one would be in the calf , ankle etc so its important that a clot is ruled out. In the meantime , try and circulate your legs as much as possible , use heat packs and elevation. Good luck!

Read this, and try it. Its called Homan's sign, and it is a quick check for DVT. You should still see a doctor even if it is negative.
