Is ambulation recommended in patients diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Is ambulation recommended in patients diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis?

No.Not until the blood is decoagulated or a greenfield filter is put in place.

As in ambulating, No. You want to rest and hope the blood clot does not move. If you meant amputation, only if the rest of the foot dies or is gangrenous from lack of blood flow. Normally you would be put on a blood thinner and watched carefully so it does not move towards the lungs or heart.

I would think that would depend on the patient and how severe their case is. However, since one of the risk factors for DVT is being confined to bed, I would think that moving around would be best.

That's a tricky one - improving the circulation by walking can actually cause the clot to break free and move throughout the circulatory system, but remaining in a lying position can cause more thromboses. Is this person already diagnosed, or are they trying to prevent DVT? Are they on a blood thinner, or are they scheduled to have a clot treated? This is something that really needs to be discussed in detail with a physician.
