Is Deep vein thrombosis more common in elderly? Is it more common to occur in man than women?

Please give me more details

DVT is a bit more common in older people, simply because our blood tends to thicken and clot more easily as we age. Additionally, the eldery are more likely to sit in one place for long periods of time, which can contribute to the problem. They also don't heal as well after injuries, and spend more time immobile, which again contributes to the problem. That's why it is so important to help them stay mobile, even if it's just a few minutes of walking every few hours.

I don't know of any studies which say it is more common in one sex or the other. That doesn't mean there aren't any, it only means I don't know about them if there are. As far as I know, it happens to both sexes equally. The main contributor is lengthy immobility with the legs down and your feet on the floor, or lengthy immobility after something like surgery. In the US, where I live, it is pretty standard to give people aspirin or even an actual blood thinner after surgery if the doctor thinks that DVT may become a problem. They also encourage mobility as soon as possible, and they encourage patients to walk around every few hours. Generally, if someone is hospitalized for something, part of the program is that they will not be released from the hospital until they can walk quite a bit and also use the restroom and sometimes even move their bowels. (The bowel bit is because people also tend to get very constipated when hospitalized, and for many medical conditions, straining to move the bowels can be harmful to the patient--they just want everything to be in good working order before they let you go home.)

If you are worried about DVT, talk to your doctor and find out if aspirin or a blood thinner is recommended in your case. Also watch for pain in the legs, as the people I know who have had it have all had some pain. Most of all, keep yourself up and moving. For instance, my husband and I recently had one leg of a long airplane trip which was a little over 11 hours long. Both of us were careful to get up every few hours and walk around for five minutes or so to establish good circulation in our legs.

DVT is a problem for heart patients, but most heart patients here in the US take at the very least daily aspirin, and most of them take a blood thinner, such as warfarin or Plavix, as well. I, myself, take 81 mg of aspirin daily. It was originally prescribed for me because of migraine headaches, but then later, I had to have a repair done on my heart, so I need to keep my blood thin because of that. My doctor has told me that when I am older, I will probably need a bigger dose of aspirin, or something like Plavix, just to keep clots from forming near the repair site.

DVT has become a popular topic of discussion in the last few years, so I am sure if you Google it, you can find out all sorts of good information.

Best of luck to you.

A few other factors are involved. Some illness increace your risk of clot such as: sickle cell, lupus, cancer, and in OB cases most likely placenta previa or even cesarian.
