How soon after getting Deep Vein Thrombosis????

A friend got DVT from a long haul flight to Las Vegas in Feb 06. He now wants to travel to the Dominican Republic in October this year which has a flight of nearly 10 hours. He was on Warfarin until November 06 is he now safe to fly????

Seek GP advice before flying but in theory as long as he takes precautions against becoming immobile for the 10 hours.

The GP may opt to give an anti-coagulant for the journey or recommend anti-embolic stockings to help circulation.

There should be no reason why he shouldnt fly at all though!

The only person who could and should answer this question is his doctor.

Sheesh I wouldnt. I

it is better for you to seek medical advice for you to know the circumstances, hope this help...

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot (thrombus) in a deep vein, usually in the legs.

Clots can form in superficial veins (called superficial thrombophlebitis or phlebitis) and in deep veins. While blood clots in superficial veins rarely cause serious problems, clots in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis) require immediate medical care. See pictures of a developing blood clot and the leg veins.

These clots are dangerous because they can break loose and then travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism is often life-threatening. DVT can also cause long-lasting problems. DVT may damage the vein and cause the leg to ache, swell, and change color. It can also cause leg sores.

Blood clots most often develop in the calf and thigh veins, and less often in the arm veins or pelvic veins. This topic focuses on blood clots in the deep veins of the legs, but diagnosis and treatment of DVT in other parts of the body are similar.

What causes deep vein clots to form?
Blood clots can form in veins when you are inactive. For example, clots can form if you are paralyzed or bedridden or must sit while on a long flight or car trip. Surgery or an injury can damage your blood vessels and cause a clot to form. Cancer can also cause deep vein thrombosis. Some people have blood that clots too easily, a problem that may run in families.

A friend of mine had this.
If someone gets DVT once they will almost certainly get it again.
Get them to check with the doctor as only they will know the specifics and their fly-ability.

Obviously a doctor is best for advice, but I have flown long distance with circulation problems. He should wear compression socks, and not stay in a fixed position for a long time - wriggle his feet, get up and move around. Avoiding alcohol, and drinking plenty of water, also beneficial.

The answer is simple; "does you friend like to dice with DEATH?"
Thus, NO.
What should he do? Split the trip twixt Air /Sea.
Send an Email to cruise@dial.pipex.com or via www.cruisepeople.co.uk for info on a vessel to say Galveston/Houston then fly from there to Las Vegas or ask same people to suggest alternatives. You won't get DVT at Sea and it then becomes a short haul flight.

I have had a DVT not very nice at all.
Dont risk his life by peoples say so, he must see his doc about this, they may want him to go on warfrin for a while to cover it and or flight stockings.
I know they are not very nice but , hey if they save your life why not.
