I started taking the low-dose contraceptive pill 'Mercilon' yesterday, HELP!?

After I took it (at lunch time yesterday), I was extremely dizzy, had a headache, nausea, 'drunk' vision, slurred thoughts, slurred speech (could hardly talk) and I was very pale. I had to leave school and go home early. Later on that evening I experienced a pain in my upper thigh (causing me to limp, but there was no swelling or redness), and minor chest pains.

I woke up this morning and my leg pain was much better, and I took a second pill which caused a lot of dizziness, headache and I had very minor short chest pains again, so I couldn't go into school today. I also had slight nausea.
I have read about deep vein thrombosis and blood clots, but how likely is it that I have it?
I am 16, small, very slim, non-smoker and have low blood pressure. However, I don't do any exercise. No known family history of these conditions (I don't know any of my dad's family).
Should I stop taking the pills altogether and go back to my doctor, or take them before bed so I don't feel the side affects?

My doc told me that I will probably feel some side effects but she said I should wait and see if they go away.
Also if I make a doc appointment I will probably have to wait a week or so to see my doc (usually do)
PLEASE HELP!!! THANKS!!!!

Hi, for a start dont panic. The chances of you getting deep vain thombosis aged 16 are very very small. This particular condition if more associated with taking the pill for a very long time, 30 years or more non stop. Its also much more common in older women so at 16 there is no way you have it, especially after only 2 days on the pill. However, i take mercilon and have done since i was 14 (am now 23) and i never experience the side effects you have mentioned. When the doctor said you might experience side effects what he meant was possibly slight nausea and headaches or something to that effect. The side effects you are experiencing sound pretty bad and you should make an appointment with your doctor immediately. Ask them for a emergency appointment if you can get one, not because i think you are in danger becoming seriously ill but because its definately not agreeing with you. I would also recommend not taking any more pills until you have talked to your doctor. Im not a medical expert but they dont sound like they are doing you any good at all. Please stop worrying about deep vain thrombosis. Its not something that could have happened in such a short space of time.

Also there are hundreds of different brands of pill out there, all different and all with different effects. This one is just not for you. Dont worry, just speak with your doctor as soon as you can.

those are extreme side effects for a contraceptive.
Personally, i would stop taking this pill. AND call your doctor to discuss the symptoms.

slurred speech is particularly disturbing. be sure to mention it.

well I was on Mercilon for three years, and I never experiences anything like that. I would suggest that you go back to the doctor, explain your symptoms and get him to prescribe a different one. Mercilon just might not be for you, there's loads of other different ones there.

you need to call the Dr. office and tell them what is going on, they will either have the nurse or Dr. call you back. It sounds that you may need to take something else.

stop taking the pill asap, if you are using it for protection against getting pregnant , you could use a condom !. then go to your doctors and tell them about the side affects, you probably need a different pill. good luck hope your feeling better soon.

dizzy and slurred speech is not good
stop taking it and ask your doctor to give you another prescription

If i were you, i'd stop taking the pill right away. It's common for women to experience some negative side effects when starting the pill, but the ones you mention are extreme. Call the Dr's office and tell them what's going on.

Calm down... the chances that you have had any kind or DVT-related problems are extremely unlikely.

I think you have had an allergic reaction to that type of pill. Your symptoms are identical to that of my sisters - she was allergic to a particular type of pill, not entirely sure which. You need to STOP TAKING THE PILL and go and see your Dr, immediately. There are plenty more pills you can try that you wont be allegic to.

Side Effects are common but should not be this extreme.

Remember to keep a note of what you are allergic to, for future reference.

hope you feel better soon

To have so many side effects of the nature you've described isn't what normally happens.

It would be best to contact your doctors surgery as soon as possible for advice. If you can't see the doctor you can probably see the nurse or get a telephone consultation sooner. Doctors in the UK are meant to be available for urgent appointments the same day, so you might be able to get in tomorrow.

I presume you've been prescribed this as a contraceptive - if you have had unprotected sex in the last few days do not stop taking it without seeking medical advice.
