I take Lovenox. Does anyone who takes this, have black & blue marks on stomach? Is this normal? Please help.?

Lovenox is a medicine for a DVT (deep vein thrombosis aka major blood clot) taken subcutaneously (2 needles I inject into my stomach daily). My total dosage is 140 mgs. (1 needle is 100 mg. & the other is 40 mg.) I have been doing this since May of 2006. I have noticed that more times this year than last year I am getting black & blue marks a day or two after doing a shot in that area. Has anyone who is on or has been on Lovenox had these problems? Sometimes the areas are painful. I have asked my vasular doctor & he told me it was because I was doing both shots on the same side so I now do 1 shot on right and 1 on left and switch every day but I am still having this problem. I would be grateful to anyone who can help me. Thanks in advance.

I have never taken Lovenox but I am a nurse and I have given lovenox injections. Yes bruising is normal. Lovenox as you know is a blood thinner, so you are more prone to bleeding, so when you cause any injury to the skin naturally there is bleeding, and you are more likely to bleed. To help prevent using the same ares roatate injection sites. Picture a cross on your stomach with your bellybutton being the center. Rotate between the 4 areas. Plus you can always talk to your doctor about oral anti-coagulants like Coumadin and Plavix.

You Dr is Correct you need to switch sides do not give the same shot in the same area ever time this area will be come sensitive and bruised. My Son Gets Alergy shots and they try not to poke him in the excact same spit everytime.

I had Lovenox injections after knee replacement surgery in March of this year. I was on it for 14 days. Every single injection site bruised...my husband gave me the shots and always used different side and sites each time. Sometimes they hurt and/or stung, sometimes they didn't. You are obviously on a large dose of Lovenox.
Since Lovenox is a blood thinner, bruising is a side-effect since thinning the blood can cause easy bruising..from what I understand, this is a "normal" and natural side-effect from thinner blood...my bruises left me looking like I had been kicked (with a stilleto heel!) all over my tummy...not pretty..!!!
I would think this is nothing to worry about, but if you continue to be concerned, consult with your surgeon again or call your primary care Dr.

Yes, the black and blue marks are normal. I had to take my 85 year old father off of Coumidin blood thinner before he had surgery and I gave him the Lovenox shots 2X a day. They told me to expect b&b and he certainly had it. I'm wondering why they would have you on Lovenox full time. The Coumidin stays in your system longer while the Lovenox is gone after 12 hours. Good luck!
