If DVT is such a massive problem, then why aren't all these monks dropping down dead around us?

DVT = deep vein thrombosis

One of the greatest preventatives of DVT is walking. Monks walk, a lot. DVT is on the up rise because people don't do enough walking.

That's why after surgery the hospital staff tries to get you up and walking. If you have been bedridden for as little as three days you are at risk for a DVT. If you are on a plane for more than 4 hours you are at risk. In fact "economy class syndrome" was named for the malady. Lack of movement (not enough leg room) and dehydration are big factors.

Our society just doesn't walk like it used to, we are so busy rushing here and there that we don't take the time to walk from here to there.

Monks on the other hand do actually walk a pretty fair amount. It is part of that humility thing. (No disrespect intended) The humble and poor cannot afford cars.

Yes, DVT is a problem but one that can be handled with more walking. Hope this helps.

That's a good question, why aren't they? Maybe it is because we do not fully understand DVT. Also it might be that the level of fitness is not really taken into consideration. I have clients who are sedentary at work and do not seem to have any problems...but they are also in a fitness regimen that keeps them active enough to combat that...if it truly is a problem.

I'm not so sure it really is a problem.

DVT can by chronic as well as acute. Acute DVT is what we normally see in ER presenting with sudden onset of pain and swelling of an extremity. Any DVT should be evaluated by the proper physician.

dvt is a huge problem but why pick on the monks,there are other groups of people equally likely to be in danger

What does being a monk have to do with DVTs?
