Why give a Foley Catheter to someone with a decubitus ulcer?

I am a new nurse. Tonight I was asked to fax a doctor for an order for an F/C because someone has a Decubitus Ulcer. I was curious as to why they wanted this done. Her ulcer isn't supposed to be a wet to dry dressing but everyone packs it that way except me. Shouldn't we try doing the treatment right before resorting to an F/C?

The Foley will keep the decub area dry and prevent moisture and bacteria accumulating there. You need to follow a good cleansing technique for the foley with soap and water daily and change the foley based on your institutions policy.
As for the care of the ulcer, you are right to follow the doctor's orders left in the pt's chart.Usually the standard treatment is wet to dry dsg daily, so check w the MD if they want to do that.
As a new nurse you must have a lot of questions.Find another seasoned nurse that you trust and go to her with your questions.Welcome to the profession:)

The foley catheter is to keep her from getting wet from urine etc so the wound can heal.

May be trying to keep her still in bed instead of having to use bedpan or go to pot.....This good lesson the chance of infection or wound dressing coming out..

I assume your patient is either paralyzed or bed ridden. They really need a foley catheter so that it's easier for them to empty their bladder. foley cath is for urine output in case you got confused.

Bedsores, more properly known as pressure ulcers or decubitus, are lesions caused by unrelieved pressure to any part of the body, especially portions over bony or cartilaginous areas.

Treatment include :
- debridement
- infection control
- nutritional support
- wound interfension.

By inserting foley cath, your doctor meant to control further infection. Without cath, pee will raise humidity, which is good for growth of germ / bacteria.

I think your doctor treat the patient with antibiotics, h2o2, bethadine, massage etc. You better read over your book.
