The inner ear, or cochlea

From the layout of your question, it would appear that I am assisting you to answer question No. 10 and, for the record, there is no lower ear as such. However, to your question - sensorineural hearing loss is irreversible and is due to damage to the cochlear sensorineural elements or the cochlear (vestibular) nerve, which is the pathway that sound impulses take from the hair cells 鈥?organ of corti - in the semicircular canals of the inner ear 鈥?cochlea 鈥?which joins to the auditory (8th cranial) nerve, and the brain. It can progress to total deafness. There is another type of hearing loss called Conductive hearing loss. This is caused by anything that interferes with the transmission of sound from the outer to the inner ear. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.
