Deafness; what happens to the person's quality of life?

if you are born deaf...nothing
if you lose your hearing later in life... you either adapt or dont

Nothing...They just adapt. ;)

I believe that deafness affects a persons standard of living in the sense that their hearing loss may lower their self esteem and personal sense of capabilities.

Socialising and interacting with others also becomes a challenge

It changes to some extent. Some deaf people have other
scences that "improve" to make up the difference.
Learning sign language is a "plus" for them. Because sign
language is "universal," and they can talk to foreigners, when
you can"t.
Like the blind, pick up a better scence of hearing, and smell.
The deaf may not hear you cooking, but they know what is for
supper. When they see someone speaking sign, they know,
they have found "another friend." *~<}:-})>
