Why does partial deafness occur when one has a cold?

It is usually a result of fluid inside the ear. This typically comes from a swelling of the eustachian tubes that lead to the ears.

All of the following can be happening:

Your estaucian tubes, which go from your inner ear down to your throat to regulate pressure, can be swollen or clogged by mucous. Pressure there can keep your eardrum from vibrating normally.

Your ear canal can be clogged with wax, or swollen the same way, also preventing vibration.
