Should down syndrom baby having cynotic heart disease & bilateral cataract & deafness go for his heart surgery |
Down syndrome babies are mentally retarded. There musclar tone is low These baby are dependent on others through tere life. When also having defness & catarct there life become difficult Yes...because if he doesn't have the heart surgery, he will surely die far sooner than he would otherwise. Perhaps the cataracts could also be corrected surgically (don't know, that depends on other factors). Deafness also comes in degrees...most people have at least some residual hearing that can be used to benefit from hearing aids or cochlear implants. It doesn't matter that he's mentally retarded; that doesn't usually diminish the quality of life unless it's very severe. (And the level of mental retardation varies in Downs...it is always present, but some are more affected than others.) IMHO, you shouldn't deny a baby the chance at life because he or she has disabilities. Of course, some people would disagree with that, but my opinion is based upon much personal experience. Let's just say that if it had been left up to the "experts", I wouldn't be here to write this answer. YES! Children with Down Syndrome...and the accompanying physical impairments that may accompany it certainly deserve a chance to live. The heart surgery is essential. My son had it at 2 months old and the change in his energy and ability to eat was very dramatic. While he doesn't have sight or hearing issues, I know of other children who do and they are happy and living a good life. As the person above me said, there are all kinds of treatments for visual and hearing impairments. Harder...yes, maybe, but worth it when you consider the alternative. Yes... They are People too... I'm studying about this in a Law and Ethics class, a fair number of people in this world deny giving children like this surgery and just let them pass on. It might not necessarily be a bad thing, like you said, they will have it hard their entire lives and is that fair to them? Is it fair to the parents who probably can't afford the surgery, let alone the accompanying costs that would follow the child throughout his life. Also, the surgery may not work, so maybe nature running it's course is a better option. Just thought I'd throw a different opinion out there, if you chose this option, just know that you're not a bad person and parents have made this decision many times before you. See here is the thing...You cant withhold medical treatment for a handicapped child based upon the fact that they are disabled. Look up Baby Doe Laws.... So would you prefer to have him put to death? Downs children grow up to become productive members of society if their parents don't buy into the "they're mentally retarded and won't amount to anything" crap. I know, 18 year old godson has downs, works in a local grocery store... No i dont think down syndrome baby neednot be made to suffer from unneccessary surgery because it has a short life anyway. It has come to the world of deceit without any capabilities let him get a decent death which nature has organised for him. yes there is |
