Can a hearing impaired person have auditory hallucination? |
a person who has congenital deafness have auditory hallucinations Yes. Auditory hallucinations are not a function of being able to hear, but rather a result of neuronal dysfunction in the cortex. It would depend on when the hearing loss occurred. If it was there from birth (congenital hearing loss) they could not. The part of the cerebral cortex that appreciates hearing needs to be stimulated early in life, or the brain will not appreciate sound. If, however, one has hearing loss later, than you could have auditory hallucinations, b/c the brain is already attuned to that sensory modality. |
