Does any one know why cytomegalovirus causes abortions?

CMV-positive women are almost 7x times more likely to have a miscarriage those without CMV and the vaginal shedding that accompanies the virus. It has been postulated as a result of many recent studies that the infection may in fact cause excessive immune reactions between the mother and the fetus, causing the body to spontaneously abort and/or cause stillbirth.
