Cystitis Why??????????????

Why do me two daughters keep getting cystitus? They seem to get it every few weeks. They both get terrible back and stomach pain and have to take cymalon for 3-4 days

If either of your daughters is below the age of 12 years urological investigation is mandatory, to determine if there is an underlying anatomical cause. These include bladder, ureter and kidney abnormalities and urine reflux.

Another problem is that Cymalon is not an ideal management for UTI as it has a definite percentage fail rate. UTIs which are untreated, partially treated or fail to respond to treatment, may ascend from the bladder up the ureters to the kidneys. Here that may produce scarring and permanent damage.

Even if your daughters are above 12 years investigation may be reasonable but anatomical abnormalities are less common. It would be sensible however to send an MSSU and if this is positive to treat with an appropriate antibiotic, in case the problem is just a one off that is not being properly treated.

I would see the doctor.

A doctor once told me that tights or jeans can cause this..

If they try to hold their wee in for a long time aswell this can cause it..

I once heard that when you think you are finished weeing you should lean forward and see if there is anymore..This prevents the wee that is left in the bladder from going stale and stinging it which might be another cause of cystitis

The causes of cystitis are many, and a lot of cases have no cause that can be determined.

There are a few things you can do to discourage cystitis. Wiping after using the toilet should go only front to back. Even if the female only urinated, farther back there are bacteria that can cause cystitis if they reach the urethra.

Empty the bladder completely, as someone already said.

Empty the bladder every 4-6 hours or more frequently. Urine in the bladder is providing the medium for bacterial growth, so removing all of it, often, makes this medium disappear.

Dilute the urine by drinking plenty of whatever beverages appeal, before actual thirst. Sipping water all the time is good, or drinking a half-glass every hour.

Change the urine's pH by drinking cranberry juice. This old wives' tale turns out to have basis in fact.

Bladder infections are no fun at all, and if these measures don't help, you need to have your daughters evaluated by a doctor who can suggest further preventive measures.

You should take them to see their GP. Recurrent cystitis (or UTIs) in a short period of time - usually 3 or more in as many months - warrants urological investigations. Your GP should refer them.

Good luck xxq

they might not be drinking enough water cranberry juice is very good you can buy it in most super markets
