Cystic fibrosis tests? |
My son is due to be tested for cystic fibrosis, i know what this is and all about it but what is the test that they carry out? Is it just a simple swab? I have heard that there is something called the sweat test any info? My best friend that i chat with online has a 5 yr old daughter with CF and was diagnosed when she was only 2. I have heard my friend talk about the sweat test but cannot remember what she had said about it, sorry. If you leave your e-mail address i will get her to e-mail you when she returns back home the beginning of June. She is a great person and knows ALOT about CF because she reads everything she can about this disease and how to help her daughter. they do a test on their sweat. usually people with cf have an elevated cloride ion content in their sweat because the sweat glands don't produce the protein that will reabsorb it. that missing protein is also the cause of all the problems in the lungs and pancreas. Report It The sweat test is just like little electric shocks that make you sweat and they test it to see if hes positive or negative for cf. Thats the test they did for my brother, if its already in your family they may just be testing for certain strands. . . . theres over 800 i think, i know the numbers up there. But anyways that test is just them taking this little brush that resembles a mascara brush and brushing the inside of his cheek, this takes out enough cells for them to test and see if he has it. This is the test they did to me and my sisters once my brother had been diagonosed(sp). This is the simplier of the tests, its how i found out i had it too. i think they pick the test by like how old the child is and what they already know. Either way its not all that painful, the shocks my brother says it was a little uncomfortable but nothing that would make a kid cry and the swab is nothing. Well Goodluck, hope it helped a little. |
