Second hand smoking and cystic fibrosis?

If one of the parents still smoked around their two year old with cystic fibrosis would that be some form of neglect or child abuse?

In a strictly legal sense, probably not...but by all common sense, it is abusive. Cystic fibrosis is an extremely serious disease that claims lives early...any extra assault on the lungs is surely taking years off the child's life or hastening the need for a lung transplant later in life. If this person absolutely needs to smoke, it should be outside and well away from any windows the child might be sitting near.

Hell yes! That poor little thing is fighting for every breath as it is! The parent needs to be reported.

no. and neither is living in a city (air pollution), driving a car (exhaust), using a wood stove or fireplace (more damaging to respiratory system then 2nd hand cigarette smoke), or not using air conditioning (pollens, molds, etc).

While the parent should not smoke around the child doing so is not child abuse or neglect.

yea ths like not respecting their space

Years ago, we didn't understand how harmful smoking can be for those who share the air. Because we now know how much damage second-hand smoke can do, I think parents who continue to endanger their child (especially one already having issues with breathing) are at least irrespnsible , if not actually guilty of neglect or abuse. In my world that is a semantics argument. It isn't good, can we all agree on that??? So don't do it anymore..

Yes. It is also ignorant. I can't imagine an adult, or anyone, smoking around a CF child. If someone smoked around my CF granddaughter, I would quickly escort them out the door. I would think this child is a patient at a CF center. The doctors always ask if the child is around smoke; I hope the parents aren't lying. Social services needs to get involved in this situation.

Legally I don't think it would fly. However statics have proven that a CF child around second hand smoke loses 10% of their Lung capacity. Here is the link to that article if you like.

As much as I would like to say yes....the answer is actually no, at least in OH. We tried reporting my cousin for that and they laughed at us...literally. However, CFF did studies and found that a CF patients lung function was reduced by 10% if they were around second hand smoke (Since there is now solid proof maybe the results will change). I am attaching the link for the article if you would like to read it.

Yes it is child abuse. My daughter has cystic fibrosis and according to the latest research at Johns Hopkins, exposure to second hand smoke decreases lung function by 10% and is the equivalent of 7 years of pulmonary decline. Anyone who thinks smoking around anyone with Cystic Fibrosis is okay is neglectful and abusive.

According to one of the directors of the Cystic Fibrosis centers in Minnesota clearly explains that anyone who is neglectful of their patients treatments and puts them in an unsafe environment are reported to child services. Second hand smoke being one of them.

This is a very simple question with a common sense answer. And as a mother of a baby with CF, knowing the damage and detrimental outcome smoking around children with Cf would cause.... I am disgusted by anyone who would continue to do so. Shame on you if you do!
