3 week old with abnormal teasts for cystic fibrosis? |
OK i am a little freaked out right now. I just got a call from her doctor saying she has to go for testing to see if she has cystic fibrosis. The father nor I am sure if we have the genes but it is in his family i think his aunt in a carrier of it. In my7 family i have not see or heard of this condition. Could it be possible for her to test abnormal for it and just be a carrier?....If you also know of any support groups for mothers with children with the desiese could you let me know...THANKS The screening test done on new babies for cystic fibrosis doesnt tell wehter or not the baby is a carrier. The test measures immunoreactive trypsinogen. This ie hig in people with CF (but not high in carriers its normal in carriers). However just because the results were high does n0ot mean your baby has CF so thats why other tests need to be done, also false positives are common enough. As hard as it is you just need to wait for more conclusive tests. Might also want to ask for a Candida or yeast overgrowth test in your baby, it has been known to contribute to CF. The only reason I mention it is CF is such a pain to deal with in the first place. I feel for your concerns, Many CFpatients are found to also have Candida overgrowth and is easily taken care of IF you can locate a Dr. willing to check it out. http://www.nationaljewish.org lots of good info. People in your family could be carriers, CF was not tested for in babies until the last 5 years or so. There is a chance that this could be a false positive test, but there is a very low rate of this. If you want more information about cystic fibrosis you can go to cff.org, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's main page, it will answer most of your questions. If you want to talk to others you can go to the forums on cysticfibrosis.com. Good luck, hope it really is false! |
