Crutches, HELP, any tips?

I broke my left fibula three days ago, and need to return to school. But I am no master of the crutches, dose any one have any tips?? My biggest problem is the weather (rain, ice, snow), my school has linoleum flooring so it gets really slippery鈥?living in Nova Scotia on crutches in the winter not fun and any tips would be welcome; )

Thx

try cutting tennis balls to fit over the rubber tips of the crutches it helps the crutches from sliding on the floor
also wear sneakers with ridges on the soles
the rubber soles will grip the floor better than flat leather soles
have one of you friends walk along with you in case you get into trouble they can lend support especially if you have to carry a book bag
good luck hope that helps
feel better!!!!!

rapping towels on the padded part helps ease the pain on the pits

You may want to consider renting a wheelchair until you've healed enough to get a walking cast. It sounds like the crutches could actually put you at risk for MORE injuries, which is no good at all.

There should be a distance of at least 3 fingerbreadths between your armpit and the topmost portion of the crutch. The weight of your body should be borne by your hands and not your armpits when you walk, otherwise you will get crutch palsy. Spread your crutches to a point where you are most comfortable. Normally, patients are taught how to use crutches before leaving the clinic-just wondering why you were not. Common sense will tell you not to walk with crutches on slippery surfaces like ice or wet floors because no matter what you do, you won't get any traction from those small crutch tips.
