What exactly make crutches so uncomfortable?

I am doing a research project for school about crutches. I鈥檝e heard from different people that crutches are very uncomfortable and unsafe.

My first question is what exactly makes crutches uncomfortable and unsafe? Could you give any suggestions on what type of enhancements would make crutches safer, and more comfortable?

The point of this project is to get opinions from as much people as possible.

Go to a drug store and try out a pair...then you'll be able to answer both of those questions first-hand!

well people always wrap them with a towel or somthing so they dont hurt as much, but the reason that they hurt is because they rest their armpits on them..... but you are not supposed to, ask any doctor..... you are supposed to use your hands and arms for support, and it also helps build upper arm strength..... but even then your muscles may hurt, just because of the wear and tear and muscle bulilding.....

Hey if you doing research why ask go get a set and walk around a couple days on em........why ask people to do all your work for you

I have been on crutches since December 5th and I want to kill myself! I put thick socks on the armpit part because they rub on my sides and chafe them. I also have cuts and bruising on the palms of my hands. Oh and crutches + snow = distaster!

Two Words: POOR FIT
Two More: POOR TECHNIQUE

When supporting yourself on crutches, your weight is to be supported on your HANDS, not your armpits. People who insist on hanging by their armpits will be miserable.

SO: make sure the fit is such that you can use your hands properly for support, and then use the right technique.

Call a physical therapist in your town, tell them you are doing a project, and in 10 min they will be able to tell you all you will ever need to know about this topic. Go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT", and search your town.
Good Luck.
