Crutches question?

How long will I be on crutches after having surgery to fix my medial meniscus tear??

If you are having an arthroscopic menisectomy, then after surgery your surgeon should tell you that you are allowed to bear weight on the leg with crutches as tolerated. You will see the doctor within a week for a follow up visit, and then he or she will tell you to either get rid of the crutches, or if you are having a hard time for some reason, then maybe just use one crutch, kind of like a cane, until the swelling goes down and your knee doesnt feel like its going to buckle when you walk without the crutch.

Now, on the other hand, if you are having an arthroscopic meniscus REPAIR surgery, which is totally different, then you will be on crutches with strict non-weight-bearing orders for several weeks. But your doctor would be very clear about that BEFORE surgery.

The first surgery (menisectomy) is much more common, so thats probably the one you are having.

Your doctor should have told you that. My guess is as long as you need them for pain. You could be off as soon as a few days or possibly a week or two.

I'm not familiar with the surgical procedure but, since it's a soft-tissue injury, I would guess you'll be on crutches at least a week to possibly a month. I honestly doubt it would be longer than a couple of weeks at most.

Just a guess on my part though. Your doctor would be able to tell you more precisely.

Good luck!

Usually 4-6 weeks. And make sure you do the physical therapy!

You should ask your doctor. It varies from doctor to doctor, and each surgery to surgery.
