DO i need crutches with my KNEE immobilizer? |
I have a sprained knee. I went to the ER to get checked and they gave me a knee immobilizer. I told them it was kind of hard to walk so they also gave me crutches. Do i need to use the crutches to make my knee heal? It isnt that hard for me to walk with only the immobilizer.... thanks I'm sortof in the sam position, except I've a contusion/infusion on the side of my left knee. I've got a knee imbolizer on for most of the day but find it easier to move around without the crutches. If the knee doesn't feel strained, or no pain is present when walking around without the crutches, then you should be fine without them. crutches are not bad.. Have you been referred to an orthopedic surgeon? This is really the person who should be answering this question. You may want to find out if the ER physican gave you a "weight bearing status"...this means how much weight are you supposed to be putting on it. If you have been given the instructions of "weight bearing as tolerated" then use of the crutches should be dependent on your pain levels, and you can generally discontinue them as you feel ready. If, however, you are "partial weight bearing or non-weight bearing" then it is imperitive that you use the crutches as directed until further follow up. When i injured my knee i was given both the immobolizer and crutches and was told to be NWB for the first 72 hours then to try and walk around with just the brace on. So i would say to use the crutches for the first couple of days then walk around with only the brace. this will help keep ur muscles for weakening as much. and will only help u in the long run I agree with everyone else. continue to use the brace and crutches for alittle bit and go to an orthopedic dr who specializes in KNEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
