How to make crutches comfy? |
I torn a tendon in my foot and need to use crutches for 3 months. I will get a cast in a week when the swelling goes down but for now I can't put any weight on it. The crutches hurt my armpits and I had to go back to school today. How can I make it easier to get around? either use a wheelchair or put towels around the underarm part of the crutches, I have been on them for six weeks, and I am 14. It is hard at school especially if there are stairs!! I am a below the knee amputee and that does not make what i have to deal with any easier. get well soon I have seen people wrap towels around the top. fold up some towells & tape them to the top of the crutches! sponge Hve u ever tried ab lounge? that thing is TOTALLY awesome and it is very comfortable for your back Just face it crutches aren't comfy and probably will never be. A way to help it a little is to put a couple wash cloths or a hand towel folded over the arm part and then tape it down on the outer edges. yeah, i broke my toe one time and had to have crutches. I found that if you can find a piece of foam or something that will form to your armpits, it will be much more comfortable If the crutches are not adjusted properly and dig into your armpits, or you intentionally lean onto the crutches, you can do PERMANENT damage to the nerves and blood vessels that pass through that area. the height should be just below where it makes contact with your armpit and the handle should allow you to hold the crutch in that position. Take them to your MD's office, and have them measured properly. Have them add some extra thick rubber or foam to the top piece. Have them also measure the hand grips, many times they are overlooked. You can also fix them yourself, ask your Mom if she has some old shoulder pads lying around,or find some foam rubber and cut your own,and use some duct tape to hold it secure.Take care. SW FNP When your armpits become sore, do a handstand and walk on your hands for awhile. (Or you could ask your doc for Canadian, or "forearm" Crutches.) Pad the top of the crutches with foam & wrap materal strips around to hold it in place! The towels is a good idea to rest on them at the top. But in general, support your weight on your hands, and keep the tops at the upper inside of your arm, not your armpit. |
