How can I make my CRUTCHES more COMFORTABLE? |
I've got a horribly sprained ankle and the doctor has put me on crutches for a minimum of two weeks. I'm a college senior and I've got to be all over campus, plus since I'm an elementary education major, I HAVE to be on my feet and moving around. It's only been two days (and one of those days was a lazy Sunday!) and my armpits and upper sides are already bruised! The nurse at the hospital fit my crutches to me, so I know they're the correct height, but the arm pit thing will be the death of me!!!! What is the guaranteed SOFTEST, squishiest, best thing I can do to make them more comfortable? Internal bleeding is the pits! Thanks for all of the great ideas!! Best Answer to the fake boobie answer...just because that one made me laugh. Thanks for the tips and kind words! Get some lambs wool and put under arm pits...that will help haha, I remember doing this lol. AHHHH. I'm sorry you have to be on crutches. I have probably spent almost 2 months of my life on crutches and they SUCK. There is really not much you can do except get used to it. But you can duck tape towels or wrap cloth around the top to make it a little more compfortable for your armpits. you can warp something like a towell around the top of them to cushion them. I wound up wrapping the arm pit parts of the crutches in a big soft towl that I cut up. Spending the 9 dollars on it was well worth the comfort. It may help to shorten the crutches. Don't rest them in your arm pits. To start with. Keep all your weight on your forearms. Your underarms shouldn't be on the top of the crutch. You can cause nerve damage doing that. Allow at least 3 finger spaces between the top of the crutch and your armpit. GREETING'S: yOU ARE IN A PAINFUL SPOT. wHEN i TOOK MY NURSING, WHICH WAS SOME TIME AGO, i BELIEVE WHEN WE FITTED A PAIR OF CRUTCHES THE PADDED TOP NEVER MADE CONTACT WITH THE ARM-PIT. WHEN YOUR HANDS ARE ON THE HANDLES THERE SHOULD BE A 1/2 INCH OR SO FROM THE ARM- PIT ITSELF, MAY HAVE TO AJUST THE HANDLES. hOPE THIS HELPS. jOHN Take kitchen towels and wrap them around the part of the crutch that goes under your armpits. Use safety pins to keep them secure. If necessary apply more weight to your hands - if this gets sore, put towels here. Try to move the weight from armpits to your hands; when hands get sore, back to armpits. underarm crutches are nobodys friend (including mine), since im a daily user of them. |
