Remedies for sore arms from crutches? |
I just got crutches today and I have to use them to get all over my huge school campus. Crutches are my only option, so i have to work with them. my armpits and bra strap area and insides of my arms are really sore and swollen. It hurts to use them so bad. What can i do to help my arms? There's a product called "Glide", it comes in a container that looks like a deoderant stick....applying that to the chafed areas will help while using the crutches. Another thing is to add additional cushioning to the crutches, but not so much that your arms will be to far from your body. You should tape towels or cloths around the top of your crutches, or some foam. That way they will be softer under your arms. Crutches don't come with enough padding. My grandma did this when she broke her leg. First--you're going to be sore. you're using a completely different action now for walking. The process is going to take a toll on your body. But you need to make sure your crutches aren't too far under your arms. They shouldn't be cutting into your armpit. There should actually be a little bit of room between your armpit and the rubber on top. That rubber is not made to sit in your armpit. you will have to use more upper body/arm strength to keep yourself upright on the crutches, but try not to just lean constantly on them. put a hand towel around the rubber part of the top of crutch, use rubber bands to strap it on. This will make a padding hopefully that will help. Actually you shouldn't be touching the crutches directly under the arm pits, you should using your hands to push your body above it, yes your palms will get sore but its just the downfall of having to use crutches. Make sure they are adjusted to the right height, just below the armpits, not making your shoulders scrunch over the crutches......good luck, I know its not fun ..... but this too shall pass. Heavily pad the arms of the crutches with foam wrapped with cloth. You might get some ideas from others that may help, including the best way to balance and walk with them. Foam and towels like evryone else said. Other things I did were: |
