Daughter finished treatment for Croup, but is still coughing?

My 2 year old was perscribed prednisolone on Monday after coughing Saturday night and all Sunday, and diagnosed with Croup. We finished the last of her 3 day treatment Wednesday night, and last night she was right back to coughing a lot. She was a lot better previous to this. Should she be taking more medicine, or does it take time for her to get better? This is her first time with croup. Thanks for the help!

The cough can hang aroung for a while after the diagnosis. This is normal due to the body trying to eliminate mucus and other things in the lungs and airways. The steroid will keep her airway open for up two 2 weeks after the medication is stopped. If I were you let her cough during the day to get everything off, put her in the bathroom while you let the hot water runn and cup your hand and pat her back and chest. stay away from the clavical bone. During the night you can give her a cough suppresent but do not use an expectorant at the same time b/c that will make her cough. You can let a humidifier work at night but make sure that you do not use it offen bc that can cause too much moisture. Use maybe 2-3 times a week. If the cough has not gone away in a week or two take her to the doctor. She might need an antibiotic. She will be ok.

Any cough has the tendency to hang around for sometime. However, since it was the croup call her doctor and explain this to him/her.

my children both have had croup, they would wake up in the middle of the night coughing and unable to breathe. just sit in the bathroom with the shower on really hot and the steam will clear up the cough and make them feel better.

she will still have some symtoms after med. it takes some time even after the med to clear up
