Treating croup?

My daughter was seen in the dr office this morning as was given a cortisone injection to treat her croup. When do you typically see improvement following this injection? I have also been using Ibuprofin/tylenol alternating for fever, triaminic decongestant and benadryl to dry up the congestion. I have been running the hot shower, having her breath in cold air from the freezer, and using a cool mist humidifier at bedtime. Any other suggestions? I am hoping for a better night tonight.

Sounds like you have all the basics already.

The corticosteroid shot has antiinflammatory effect which should reduce swelling in your daughter's throat and make it easier for her to breathe. Since she had the shot this morning, some of its effects should be kicking in by now.

I did a check of medical literature to see if they mentioned how long it took to work. I couldn't find any study that actually said that. As a matter of fact, I could find no evidence (in my VERY limited review) that it will shorten the course of the disease. What it really does is keep it from getting worse. One study tested it against placebo, and found that only the placebo patients ended up back in the emergency room. So I think you will probably have a better night tonight, but no promises.

Vicks Vapo Rub my mother used it on me and I used it on my kids, it was always scarry stuff to me, try the Vicks it should help
