I need help my 5 yr old has the croup. and he can not stop coughing. any suggestions would help. thanks?

this is the first time i have ever dealt with the croup. i feel bad for my son. nothing seems to be helping him. i have tried taking him into the cold weather to help the swelling go down in his throat. and that should help with the coughing. that didn't work. caffeine does not help. i gave him cough medicine and it helped a little. i heard that a teaspoon of honey works. does this really work? a hot steamy room works for a little while. if anyone has any suggestions i am ready to listen. thank you

Warm fluids will relax his muscles in his throat, Also warm mist. Do you have a vaporizer you can keep going? Boil a pot of water, if not.Where your child cannot reach it. This is still reccomended Also is he old enough to suck on a sucker? I think that your best bet is to have him drink like warm apple juice, or lemonade. The warmer the better. You should also have him sleep in the same room with you because croup can be dangerous. If he has the stridor(barking) when he is not coughing and the warm fluids don't help, you should go to the ER. Also Ibuprofen should help with the inflammation in his throat. Hope hes better soon,

if your child is under 6 cough meds are not reccomended, with croup otc cough meds will not help, if it gets much worse he should see his doctor to possibly get some steroids.

If the warm air doesnt work, you are 100% corect to take him in the cold air/ but you dont need to go outside, just let him stick his head by the freezer door.

Taking him out into the cold is insane. Have you taken him to his pediatrician? If not, you need to do so ASAP.

Firstly, are you sure it is croup? Your son is at the very top end of the age range for contracting it. There is a chance it could be whooping cough which is very dangerous in young children.

Usually the symptoms of croup go away on their own within a week, so if he isn't struggling to breathe, most medical professionals recommend letting it run its course.

Putting your child in a hot, steamy room is no longer recommended due to the risk of scalding.

In serious cases, steroid-based cortisone drops are usually recommended to reduce the inflammation. See your doctor either way, firstly to rule out whooping cough, secondly to see whether your son requires a prescription for medication.

My pedi told me to use the freezer,
she told me to open the freezer up couple times a day and stay there for a couple minutes,
the cold is suppose to help your child...
how bizare is that?
