Is croup cough contagious?

Croup itself is not contagious, it is a particular inflammation of certain parts of the throat which cause a particular sound on coughing. The virus which causes the inflammation is likely to be contagious, but may only cause cold or flu-like symptoms in another patient.
Croup can be very serious in a young child. If the patient is struggling to breathe, sticking his tongue out attempting to breathe easier, or having any other signs of distress, immediate care is needed.
Croup should not be confused with whooping cough (pertussis), which is likewise quite serious in a young child but is itself a distinct virus.
