How do you reduce the symptoms of croup in adults? |
How do you reduce the symptoms of croup in adults? My grandfather, mother, son and daughter all get croup, several times a year. We have had a pulmonologist tell us that adults dont get croup. Now this family is proof that they do indeed. Here are a few things we do to relieve symptons. In the winter time, if you wake up in the middle of the night barking...go outside, the cold air seems to work really well. As does very humid air.Go into the bathroom, shut the door, turn on the shower super hot, and just sit there(not in the water) and breathe in the steam. We also have a nebulizer. One other tip, use a cool mist humidifer, the hot mist ones have too much of a mold factor. Night time is the worst, that is when the barometric pressure drops, and that is when you are more symptamatic. Rub Vicks on your chest and go in the bathroom. turn the shower on hot and breath in the steam. This works, I have done it.Feel Better! Also drink a cup of hot coffee afterwards. Adult croup is probably due to allergy. Steam inhalation should help. If not, take steroids. If it is very severe, epinephrine taken with a nebulizer should help. Croup is not an accepted medical diagnosis-rather say upper respiratory infection or URI. Many of the other suggestions are good for symptom relief, EXCEPT...steroids are dangerous drugs! Also wouldn't recommend epinephrine-otherwise known as adrenalin. Cool mist humidifier, antihistimines and time are probably the best bet. |
