Son with bad cough for over two weeks?

my 8 year old son had bad case of croup just over two weeks ago the cough is not as bad but its still there he coughs all day all night his getting exusted doctors say thats his ok his been on redipred three courses two courses of anitibotics and cough mixture started on the nebulizer four times a day four days ago and says his chest sometimes hurts when coughing if anyone has any ideas for i would appreciate it.

Two weeks is too long. Most children recover from croup symptoms within a couple of days. I strongly suggest that you see a different doctor. You don't say if your son's cough is productive, however, if it is you should insist that the sputum be tested so that the correct antibiotic can be used to get rid of the infection. Also, if the cough is interrupting his sleep you may wish to have the nebulizer therapy increased to include a 'prn' or an as needed dose. If you are only using albuterol for the nebulizer you can ask to have Atrovent added. This is also a bronchodilator that is a bit slower to act but lasts longer and combined with the albuterol will synergize or boost the effect of each other. Finally, if the cough medicine only has a suppressant you can ask for one with codeine as a last resort. Good luck.

This may indeed be simply an allergic reaction, but there has been a resurgence of whooping cough over the last 2 years. So my advise is to go to doctor and ask them to do a culture so that you know for sure. Do not allow them to give your son any broad spectrum antibiotic since it may be more harmful in the long run to his ability to fight off infections.
Please do not ignore this situation. If you don't have insurance, you can go to the ER and they have to see him. And you get to make payments.

A few things to try: Mucinex For Kids for the cough: will help bring up all the junk, which makes the cough happen; a humidifier in the child's room while they are sleeping with some Vicks or Kaz solution in it; breathe right nasal strips for kids (if the nose is a problem); JR Watkins Apothecary Rub (sold at Wal Mart, way better than Vicks VaporRub), rub it on the chest, under the nose, and on the throat; drink lots of liquids and eat lots of popsicles; Vicks honey lemon cough lozenges can help as well; for severe sore throat pain, use a sore throat liquid designed for children and avoid the sprays.
