Identical Twins and Crohn's disease? |
This was actually stemmed from another question I had and a response I got there. I would really love for a medical professional who knows something about this to weigh in if there are any out here. My husband has an identical twin who has Crohn's Disease. He suffers from ulcerative colitis...my husband does not have this same disease. During their childhood they were a case study at a Children's Hospital in Ohi where they grew up. They were put through the medical ringer you could say having every test imaginable at that time run on them. From what I understand, Crohn's disease has not been determined as a genetic disorder I guess and there are some thoughts it might be caused by environmental factors. I am not stating that as fact, only hearsay. Fast forward from the 70's till now..medical research has travelled light years! They have been approached by a team of geneticist who again want to test. In short, is it really that uncommon in identical twins for one to have something like this disease and the other to not? I have read that while identical in DNA immune systems in identical twins can repsond differently to diseases. How good of a case study are they really? We are talking some VERY painful procedures such as the bone marrow biopsies for one. I'm an RN, and while I don't specialize in this area, I do have some knowledge of it as my brother and sister both have Crohn's while I (so far) have managed to remain free of it. My understanding is that there are hereditary tendencies to the disease, but it isn't simply something that you get just because you inherited the gene for it. I tend to think that external stressors would trigger an autoimmune reaction in a person who has the genetic predisposition to the disease. If I were in your husband's position, I would go with the testing only to try to find out why one twin has it and the other doesn't - it may help those of us who are close to the disease but not showing symptoms. My identical twin sister has had crohns disease for 13 yrs now and I still show no sign of it. I would never undergo painful procedures to see if maybe I may get something that is crazy. I take it say by day and Im 32 now and perfectly healthy. Report It wie alt du was macht du heute |
